There are 40,000 women serving in the Ukrainian army fighting against Russia, according to Monday’s announcement of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense. This was reported by agency DPA on Tuesday night.
Women thus form approximately five percent of the total force of the Ukrainian armed forces. Approximately 5,000 women are currently also directly involved in combat operations.
The report of the Ministry of Defense also states that a total of 13,400 women have been able to participate in combat operations by the time of its publication.
There are currently many more women in the Ukrainian army than in 2014, when the number of women in the armed forces reached approximately 16,500.
Ukraine has been defending itself against Russian forces, which launched an invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, for 21 months, DPA reminds.
