The Ulawun volcano in Papua New Guinea began erupting on Monday (November 20) and spewing volcanic plumes up to 15 kilometers high. In this regard, the Japonský meteorologický úrad (JMA) evaluates the possible risk of a tsunami on the coast of Japan, informs agency AP.

Seismic activity of the Ulawun volcano lying on the islands of Nová Británia was recorded at approximately 07:30 CET. JMA has not issued tsunami protection so far. She stated that no significant changes in sea level have been detected already at observation sites in Japan.

However, she appealed to the Japanese living in coastal areas to be vigilant in case of a possible delayed arrival of the tidal wave.

The Pacific Tsunami Prevention Center, based in Hawaii, also issued no warning.

Ulawun is one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world. The eruption of Jej in June 2019 displaced approximately 7,000 – 13,000 people from their homes. In the past century, it also appeared on the lists of so-called sopiek dęśročia obserovaných seizmólógmi because of intensive eruptions and related risks.
