LONDON. A rare bottle of Scotch whiskey Macallan, almost a hundred years old, was sold at an auction in London on Saturday for almost 2.2 million pounds. It is the highest auctioned sum so far for a bottle of wine or liquor, the AP agency reported.

In 1986, the whiskey was bottled to only 40 bottles, previously matured in sherry casks for 60 years. Twelve bottles, including the one that was auctioned on Saturday at the London branch of the Sotheby’s auction house, have labels designed by the Italian painter Valerio Adami. One of them was apparently destroyed by the earthquake in Japan, according to the AFP agency.
Another bottle from the same court was sold for almost 1.5 million pounds in 2019, until now it was the record holder in its category. The 0.75-liter bottle handed over on Saturday is also the first to be renovated in the distillery before the auction. It included replacing the cork and re-gluing the corners of the label.
A milliliter of spirits was extracted from the given bottle so that tests could be carried out and compared with another bottle from the year 1926. The specialist, who had the opportunity to taste a “little drop” of this whiskey, stated that it is already very rich, with a touch of dried fruit, roots and wood tones.
“The Macallan 1926 is the only whiskey that every auctioneer wants to offer and every collector wants to own,” said Sotheby’s global head of spirits Jonny Fowle.
The final price of 2,187,500 pounds significantly exceeded the expected estimate of 750,000 to 1.2 million pounds.
