VIEDEŇ – In the first round of the second phase of the MS 2025 qualifiers, Slovenian handball players will meet the winner of the match between Luxembourg and Israel.
This was decided by Tuesday’s draw at the headquarters of the European hádzanárskej federácie (EHF) in Vienna. The Slovaks will play their first match at home on March 13 or 14 next year, and the return match will be on March 16/17. in March.
The Slovaks figured before the draw in the second with two performance baskets and among their potential opponents were Belgium, Lithuania and Ukraine. Until the second qualifying phase, coach Fernando Gurich’s team got into a double-header with Kosovo, when they won 33:23 at home in Považská Bystrica, but lost 25:28 in the return game. On the same date, the matches between Luxembourg and Israel were also played, but due to the tense situation in Israel, the authorities postponed them to a later date.
If the Slovenian players want to advance to the world championship in Croatia, Denmark and Norway (January 2025), they must also manage the final round II. the qualification phase, in which 18 of the 21 ME 2024 participants will be presented in May next year.
From the vyzyrebovaných barážových dvoíc, then jedenáť advancing teams to MS emerge. From European countries, only the three organizers Croatia, Denmark, and Norway have the same participation in the World Championship in 2025, and the best of them will be the European Championship 2024 in Germany. Slovaks last started at the World Cup in 2011 in Sweden, where they took 17th place.
